1983 Zakspeed Mustang GTP

The 1983 GTP Mustang was an advanced, computer-designed, high-tech car that moved Ford into the top ranks of GTPrototype racing. Created to do battle with Lolas, Jaguars and the all-conquering Porsches, the front-engined GTP continued to use the 1.7-liter inline 4-cylinder unit from the earlier Zakspeed Mustangs. But this time the Ford/Zakspeed/Roush connection produced a car with no resemblance to any production Mustang, with exceptional aerodynamics, advanced materials and technology and a top speed of 210 m.p.h. In its first outing, the cars took a rousing 1st and 3rd at Road Atlanta. During the 1983 season, Klaus Ludwig drove this 7-11-sponsored Mustang GTP in eleven races and set track records at Road Atlanta, Riverside and Michigan. But throughout the ’83 an’84 seasons, the cars’ only win remained that ’83 Atlanta event. With GTP racing becoming the exclusive province of mid-engined cars, the GTP Mustang–as beautiful, fast and reliable as it was–would be retired at the end of the 1984 season.
