The first race in the Trans-Am Sedan Series was held at Sebring, Florida, on March 25, 1966. Nine cars were entered in the Over-Two-Liter class, three Ford Mustangs among them. This car, driven by Dr. Dick Thompson, was the only Mustang to earn points for Ford in that inaugural race, placing fourth in class. This first Trans-Am race will set the stage for the most popular production-car-based road-racing series ever seen in North America, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans and reaching its pinnacle in 1970. Given that this car was on the pole position in that race, we like to say “this is the car that started the whole thing.”
